Here’s a guide to help you get started.
Setting Up the Game
-
Gather Your Players: Bridge is played with four players, who form two partnerships. Partners sit opposite each other at the table.
-
Prepare the Cards: Our set includes two decks of high-quality cards. One deck is used per game, while the other can be kept as a backup or used for the next game.
-
Deal the Cards: The dealer shuffles the deck and deals 13 cards to each player, one at a time, in a clockwise rotation.
Basic Rules of Bridge
-
Understanding the Objective: The goal of Bridge is to win tricks. A trick consists of each player playing one card, and the highest-ranking card in the leading suit (or the highest trump card, if applicable) wins the trick.
-
The Auction (Bidding): After the deal, players bid in a clockwise manner. Bidding determines the trump suit (or if there will be no trump suit) and the number of tricks the partnership aims to win. Each bid must be higher than the previous one, either by naming a higher number of tricks or a higher-ranking suit. The bidding ends when three consecutive players pass.
-
The Play: The player to the left of the declarer (the player who made the final bid) leads the first trick. Players must follow suit if possible; if not, they can play any card. The highest card in the leading suit wins the trick unless a trump card is played.
-
Scoring: Points are scored based on the number of tricks won and the contract bid. Use the provided bridge scoring cards and pencil to keep track of scores.
Scoring Basics
Contract Points: Earn points for each trick won above the first six tricks, according to the contract bid (major suits: 30 points per trick, minor suits: 20 points per trick, no trump: 40 points for the first trick, 30 for each subsequent trick).
Bonus Points: Bonuses are awarded for making the contract, overtricks, and specific achievements like a small slam or grand slam.
Penalty Points: Points are deducted for failing to meet the contract.
