How to play Racing Demon
Racing Demon, also known as Pounce or Nerts, is a fast and exhilarating card game that's perfect for bringing some lively competition to your family gatherings.
Our Luxury Racing Demon sets, complete with a stylish box, score book, and four packets of brightly coloured playing cards, are designed to make your game nights even more enjoyable. Here’s how you can play Racing Demon with your loved ones.
Setting Up the Game
-
Gather Your Players: Racing Demon is best played with 2-8 players. The more players, the more chaotic and fun the game becomes!
-
Prepare the Cards: Each player takes a pack of cards and shuffles them thoroughly. Each deck should have a unique back design or colour for easy sorting after the game.
-
Set Up the Playing Area: Each player needs enough space to lay out their cards. A large table or clear floor space works well.
The Basics of the Game
-
The Demon Pile: Each player deals 13 cards face down to form their Demon pile. The top card is turned face up.
-
The Working Area: Beside the Demon pile, each player lays out four cards face up in a row. The remaining cards form the player’s stockpile, held face down.
Objective
The goal of Racing Demon is to get rid of all the cards in your Demon pile as quickly as possible by playing them into a common area of foundation piles in the centre of the table, starting with Aces and building up in suit to Kings.
Playing the Game
-
Ready, Set, Go!: There are no turns in Racing Demon. Once everyone is ready, someone shouts "Go!" and all players begin simultaneously.
-
Building Foundations: Players can move cards from their working area and Demon pile to the foundation piles in the centre. Only Aces can start a foundation pile.
-
Using the Stockpile: When players can’t make any moves with their Demon or working cards, they can draw three cards at a time from their stockpile and try to play the top card.
-
Recycling the Stockpile: Once a player goes through their stockpile, they can pick it up, reshuffle, and start again.
-
Moving Cards: Players can move cards from their working area to other working stacks in descending order and alternating colors (e.g., a red 7 can be placed on a black 8).
-
Winning the Round: The first player to get rid of their Demon pile shouts "Demon!" The round stops, and scores are tallied.
Scoring
-
Foundation Points: Each card played into the foundation piles scores 1 point.
-
Demon Penalty: Players receive a 10-point penalty for each card left in their Demon pile when the round ends.
-
Keeping Track: Use the provided score book to keep a running tally of each player’s points across multiple rounds. The player with the highest score after a predetermined number of rounds wins the game.
Some Tips for a Fun Racing Demon Night
-
Practice Patience: It might take a few rounds for everyone to get the hang of the game, especially younger players.
-
Keep It Friendly: Encourage a friendly competition and remind everyone that the goal is to have fun.
-
Set a Pace: Decide on a comfortable speed for your group. You can start slower and pick up the pace as everyone becomes more familiar with the rules.
-
Snack Breaks: Keep some snacks and drinks handy to keep everyone energised and happy.
